Cairns to Retire; New Hire on Board

Sometimes timing, opportunity and the stars are aligned. Consider the serendipitous meeting of Bill Cairns, Bromley’s General Manager, and Josh Witkin.  After 44 years working at Bromley in multiple roles, Cairns was contemplating retirement. At the end of the 2023 winter season, professional (Bromley) ski patroller, Josh Witkin was looking for a challenge. He walked into Bill Cairns’ office. As they say, the rest is history. Witkin was hired as the Assistant General Manager in May, 2023 – on the condition that Cairns would remain to mentor and support him until the end of the 2024 season.

In 2015, following a career in Financial Planning, Witkin, his wife and two teen age daughters, left CT and moved to VT.  They were motivated by their already established love for Bromley, their love of the state and the educational offerings at Burr Burton Academy. Those daughters are now both at UVM with ski racing and instruction on their resume.

Besides working as a Senior Professional Ski Patroller, Witkin has fully immersed himself in the Peru community serving as a volunteer firefighter, Deputy Constable, Trustee of Public Funds, member of the Zoning Board, Department of Health and Just Neighbors board.

Josh Witkin is passionate about Bromley – its uniqueness as a ‘ski’ mountain, its knowledgeable, seasoned employees, its snow/snowmaking, (making the surface conditions the best they can be given the weather, the weather, the weather), its culture of generations of families and community, its importance to the local economy, its customers. He plans to be here tomorrow. He hopes to have a positive impact on Bromley’s future. He’s focused on TEAMWORK, happy employees, happy customers and fun summer and winter experiences for all.

Around the Lodge, Witkin is tall, bearded and very approachable; on the hill he’s one of those ‘tele’ guys!
